From foster care to the NFL draft's first round
In short: Before becoming a professional football star, Jonathan Allen faced a childhood defined by instability. After his parents separated and he spent ten months in the foster care system, he rose through the ranks of college football to become one of the most highly anticipated defensive prospects in the nation.
Born in Anniston, Alabama, on January 16, 1995, Allen's early life was marked by significant upheaval. Following his parents' separation when he was three, he and his brother, Richard Allen III, were taken into child protective services at age eight. After a ten-month period in foster care, his father, Army Sergeant 1st Class Richard Allen Jr., secured full custody in 2004. He grew up in various locations, including Seattle, Pittsburgh, and Maryland. After their parents separated, his mother received custody of him and his brother.
Allen's resilience translated into elite athletic performance. A five-star recruit, he attended the University of Alabama, where he was a key part of the 2016 College Football Playoff National Championship team. During his collegiate career, he earned prestigious accolades, including the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, the Chuck Bednarik Award, and the Lombardi Award for his 2016 season. In 2012, his senior year, he earned the title of Virginia Gatorade Football Player of the Year.
Despite medical concerns regarding arthritis in both shoulders—which required surgery just two weeks before the NFL combine—Allen was selected 17th overall in the 2017 NFL draft by the Washington Redskins. He signed a four-year rookie deal worth $11.59 million on May 11, 2017. Throughout his career, which has included stints with the Washington Commanders, Minnesota Vikings, and Cincinnati Bengals, Allen has proven his durability and skill, earning multiple Pro Bowl selections and securing a $72 million contract extension in 2021. His professional journey has seen him play for the Minnesota Vikings and the Cincinnati Bengals. He has also been voted into multiple Pro Bowls during his career.
