The multi-sport prodigy who mastered nine sports before the NBA
In short: Before becoming an NBA mainstay, Josh Green was a versatile athlete capable of representing his state in nine different sports simultaneously. From breaking world records in swimming to dominating Australian rules football academies, his journey illustrates a rare level of early athletic versatility.
Born in Sydney to parents who were both semi-professional basketball players, Josh Green’s upbringing was rooted in elite athleticism. By the age of 10, he was so versatile that he was selected to represent New South Wales in nine separate sports. His early achievements included holding a world record for 7-year-olds in the 500m swim with a time of 1:29:50 and excelling in rugby, soccer, athletics, and Australian rules football.
Green’s path to basketball was marked by significant geographic moves and high-level competition. After moving from Sydney to Phoenix, Arizona, in 2014, he joined IMG Academy in Florida. There, he became a consensus five-star draft prospect, eventually leading the team to a national championship victory over La Lumiere with a 65–55 win. He chose to play for the University of Arizona over other major programs like Kansas and North Carolina.
His professional career has been defined by resilience and high-stakes transitions. After being drafted 18th overall by the Dallas Mavericks in 2020, he navigated a series of injuries—including an elbow injury in December 2022 and shoulder surgery in June 2025. He was a key contributor to the Mavericks' first NBA Finals appearance in years before participating in the league's first-ever six-team trade in July 2024, eventually landing with the Utah Jazz in August 2026.
On the international stage, Green achieved a historic milestone for Australian basketball. After being sidelined by a torn labrum in 2018, he debuted at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He helped the Australian team secure their first-ever Olympic medal in men's basketball, winning bronze after defeating Slovenia.
