The master of the enganche: how one man redefined Argentine football
In short: He was the quintessential playmaker, a virtuoso of ball retention and vision. From the streets of San Fernando to the heights of the Intercontinental Cup, Juan Román Riquelme’s career was a masterclass in elegance, even when navigating the complexities of high-stakes transfers and intense club politics.
Born on 24 June 1978, Riquelme emerged as the definitive 'enganche'—a classic attacking midfielder. His rise began at Argentinos Juniors, but it was his 1996 transfer to Boca Juniors for $800,000 that set the stage for a legendary era. Under the guidance of coach Carlos Bianchi, Riquelme became the heartbeat of a side that achieved unprecedented success, including back-to-back Copa Libertadores titles and a historic 2000 Intercontinental Cup victory over Real Madrid in Tokyo.
His career was not without turbulence. A 2002 move to Barcelona for €11 million proved difficult due to a strained relationship with manager Louis van Gaal, who often deployed him as a winger. However, Riquelme found renewed brilliance in Spain with Villarreal. During the 2004–05 season, he helped the club secure a third-place La Liga finish and earned the title of 'Most Artistic Player' from Marca, scoring a career-best 15 goals in 35 matches.
Riquelme’s legacy is deeply intertwined with Boca Juniors. After several stints, including a high-profile $15 million return to the club, he led them to further glory, including the 2007 Copa Libertadores where he was named MVP and top scorer. Beyond the pitch, his life was marked by profound personal strength; notably, he negotiated the release of his brother, Cristian, following a kidnapping shortly before his departure for Spain. He retired in 2015, leaving behind a reputation as one of the greatest playmakers in football history.
