In short: Before becoming a Bundesliga champion and a record-breaking legend, Roque Santa Cruz played under a regime of terror. At Olimpia, players faced threats of violence and withheld wages, yet this striker emerged to conquer Europe and cement his place in football history.

Roque Santa Cruz’s ascent to the top of European football is inseparable from the volatile environment of his early career at Olimpia Asunción. While the club enjoyed domestic dominance, the atmosphere under president Osvaldo Domínguez Dibb was reportedly one of intimidation. Santa Cruz later recounted how Dibb would discharge a firearm into the ceiling of the players' sleeping quarters following losses. The president also allegedly used more personal humiliations, such as urinating in players' cars, and used the threat of weapons to manipulate the distribution of monthly wages.

Despite this, Santa Cruz’s talent was undeniable. After debuting at just 15 in 1997, his performances caught the eyes of a Bayern Munich delegation—including legends like Franz Beckenbauer and Uli Hoeneß—who arrived unexpectedly at the Estadio General Pablo Rojas in May 1999. The transfer was a high-stakes negotiation; Dibb demanded as much as US$20 million, but the deal eventually closed at approximately US$7 million, a record for Paraguayan football at the time. To facilitate the move, Santa Cruz's father, Aproniano, even renounced 30% of his share of the transfer.

His subsequent career was defined by both silverware and struggle. His time with Bayern Munich featured major trophies such as the Intercontinental Cup in 2001 and the 2000–01 UEFA Champions League. However, his impact was often hampered by a cycle of injuries and intense competition from strikers like Giovane Élber, Claudio Pizarro, and Roy Makaay. Nevertheless, his longevity is remarkable; he is one of only two Paraguayans to surpass 1,000 competitive appearances and has scored professionally across four different decades.
