From French roots to Australian icons: the versatile career of Julia Zemiro
In short: Julia Zemiro is a rare multi-hyphenate who has mastered the art of being many things at once: an actress, a comedian, a host, and a political commentator. Her career spans from the improvised stages of Melbourne to the heights of national television and international awards.
Born in France around 1967, Zemiro moved to Australia at the age of two and a half in 1970. This dual heritage informs her linguistic skills; she is a fluent speaker of both English and French and has performed in French media. Her education was equally diverse, spanning a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Sydney to a Diploma of Dramatic Arts from the Victorian College of the Arts in 1994.
Zemiro’s professional trajectory is marked by a high degree of versatility. She won the Tropfest Best Actress award twice (1999 and 2001) for short films like 'The Extra' and 'Muffled Love.' She also became a staple of the Australian comedy scene, appearing on 'Totally Full Frontal' where she played over 30 characters, and hosting 'RocKwiz' from 2005 to 2016—a show that has since evolved into a touring format with over 200 performances.
In recent years, Zemiro has balanced high-profile entertainment with pointed public advocacy. She starred in the award-winning comedy series 'Fisk,' earning a Logie Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2025. Simultaneously, she has used her platform for political commentary, hosting 'Julia Zemiro's Home Delivery' and emceeing feminist protests. Her outspoken nature led to a 2022 Senate Estimates hearing regarding ABC impartiality, where it was noted that while she hosts a factual entertainment program, she is not a journalist and is permitted to espouse her own views.
Looking forward, Zemiro continues to bridge the gap between factual and comedic content. She is set to host 'Crime Night!' in November 2025, a series examining the science and psychology of crime, and she recently ran for the French consular elections in May 2026 as a French citizen.
