How an Australian model became a household name in Italy through telecommunications advertising
In short: Megan Gale rose to international fame not on the runway, but through a series of iconic commercials for an Italian telecommunications firm. Her career evolved from a local modelling contest win to becoming a prominent face in film, fashion, and television, bridging the cultural gap between Australia and Italy.
Born in 1975 in Western Australia, Megan Gale began her career by winning a modelling competition in her home state at age 18. Her breakthrough occurred in 1999 when she was cast in a series of advertisements for the Italian company Omnitel, now known as Vodafone Italy. This role provided her with significant exposure across Italy and Australia, and she maintained this advertising presence until 2006. Her influence in Italy was so pronounced that the Australian Tourist Commission appointed her as the face of Australia in the country in 2003.
Gale's career expanded into high-end fashion and media. She walked for major Italian houses like Gianfranco Ferré and Gai Mattiolo during Milan Fashion Week. In 2008, she announced her retirement from runway modelling after 15 years, though she returned in 2011 to close a show for designer Alex Perry. Her professional longevity is notable; in 2011, she celebrated a decade of partnership with the Australian department store David Jones, marking the longest-held fashion contract in the country's history. Beyond modelling, she launched her own swimwear brand, Isola, in 2010.
Her transition into acting included roles in Italian films such as Vacanze di Natale 2000 and Body Guards. In Hollywood-backed productions, she appeared in the 2005 film Stealth and secured a role as the Valkyrie in the 2015 blockbuster Mad Max: Fury Road. Gale also became a fixture on Australian television, hosting Project Runway Australia in 2011 and serving as a judge on Australia's Next Top Model in 2016. Throughout her career, she has balanced these commercial pursuits with philanthropic work, serving as the first official national representative for the Red Cross starting in 2009.
