The 'Forgotten Man' who became a Premier League legend
In short: In 1997, a £100,000 transfer brought a Finnish goalkeeper to Bolton Wanderers. Initially relegated to third-choice status and nicknamed 'The Forgotten Man,' Jussi Jääskeläinen would eventually transform from a benchwarmer into one of the most iconic figures in Premier League history.
Jussi Jääskeläinen's ascent was far from immediate. When manager Colin Todd signed him from VPS Vaasa in 1997, the Finn was relegated to the third choice behind Keith Branagan and Gavin Ward. During the 1997–98 season, he struggled for minutes as Bolton faced relegation to the First Division. His period of obscurity was so pronounced that Todd famously dubbed him 'The Forgotten Man.'
However, Jää<0xC2><0xA0>skeläinen's resilience defined his career. Following injuries and departures in the squad, he reclaimed the starting role for the 1998–99 season. Despite a difficult period in March 1999 where he conceded 16 goals in six games, he remained a cornerstone of the team. His ability to perform under pressure was highlighted by a 'world class' save against Norwich City that prevented a deficit, earning praise from teammates and fans alike.
As Bolton Wanderers rose under Sam Allardyce, Jääskeläinen became a pillar of their Premier League era. He achieved the rare feat of being an 'ever-present' goalkeeper in both the 2002–03 and 2003–04 seasons. His legendary status was cemented by moments of brilliance, such as a double-save against Manchester United in 2001, which was voted the third-best save in the Premier League's first 20 years. By the time he left Bolton in 2012, he had amassed 530 appearances, leaving a legacy as a club icon.
