From high school phenom to Major League debut in just four years
In short: In 2022, Justin Crawford was a high school senior dominating the Las Vegas circuit. By 2026, he was starting in center field for the Philadelphia Phillies. Trace the rapid ascent of a baseball prospect who turned a multi-million dollar signing into an immediate big-league impact.
Justin Crawford’s trajectory through professional baseball has been defined by remarkable speed and consistent production. After a standout high school career at Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas—where he earned Male Athlete of any Year honors and batted .503 as a senior—Crawford entered the 2022 MLB Draft. The Philadelphia Phillies selected him 17th overall, and by July 25, 2022, he had signed a contract worth $3.89 million.
His climb through the minor leagues was marked by significant power and speed. In 2023, playing for the Clearwater Threshers and Jersey Shore BlueClaws, he earned the Florida State League MVP and Top MLB Prospect Award, tallying 47 stolen bases and a .332 batting average. He continued this momentum through 2025, playing for the Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs, where he batted .334 across 112 games.
Crawford’s transition to the Major Leagues in 2026 was nearly instantaneous. After joining the Phillies' spring training as a non-roster invitee, he earned a spot on the Opening Day roster on March 25. His debut on March 26 against the Texas Rangers was cinematic: he recorded a single on the very first pitch he saw from Nathan Eovaldi. He quickly added a walk-off hit against the Washington Nationals on April 1 and his first MLB home run on May 8 against the Colorado Rockies. By the end of his 149-game rookie season, he had established himself as a reliable outfielder with a .264 batting average.
Baseball talent appears to run in the family. Crawford is the son of Carl Crawford, a veteran of 15 MLB seasons, and the second cousin of Seattle Mariners player J.P. Crawford, who was also a first-round pick.
