From secret dropout to NFL draft: the improbable rise of Khyree Jackson
In short: Khyree Jackson’s path to the NFL was anything but linear. After secretly dropping out of college and working at Chipotle, he navigated the complex world of junior college transfers and high-profile coaching connections to become an All-Pac-12 standout before his life was tragically cut short.
Jackson's journey is a study in perseverance and strategic pivots. Despite winning a state championship in 2018 with Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr. High School, he faced significant hurdles early in his collegiate career. He initially enrolled at Arizona Western College but secretly dropped out due to homesickness. While residing with his parents, he held positions at Harris Teeter, Chipotle Mexican Grill, and Six Flags America, and considered entering the esports industry as a fan of NBA 2K.
His professional trajectory shifted in 2019 when he joined Fort Scott Community College. In a move that defined his versatility, Jackson convinced the coaching staff to let him switch from wide receiver to cornerback mid-season. This transition proved pivotal; he became a top junior college prospect, recording 25 tackles and three interceptions. This success led to a connection with legendary coaches Nick Saban and Freddie Roach, eventually landing him a spot with the Alabama Crimson Tide in late 2020.
Jackson's collegiate career reached its peak at the University of Oregon. After a reserve role at Alabama, he entered the transfer portal in late 2022 and committed to Oregon due to a relationship with head coach Dan Lanning. As a starter in 2023, he recorded 34 tackles and a team-leading three interceptions, earning first-team All-Pac-12 honors. He was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL draft, only to be killed in a tragic traffic collision in Maryland on July 6, 2024.
The tragedy of his death sparked a significant tribute from the Vikings. The team honored his memory by wearing helmet decals with his initials, unassigning his locker and No. 31 uniform, and paying his signing bonus to his estate. His story remains a poignant example of how athletic talent can overcome academic and personal setbacks through sheer tenacity.
