Sixteen years after their last record, Soundgarden returned with a final, defiant studio album
In short: Released in 2012, King Animal marked the unexpected comeback of a legendary grunge band. After a long hiatus, the group reunited to prove their chemistry remained intact. This final studio effort captured the band's signature heavy sound while exploring new creative territory before their eventual dissolution in 2018.
Following a thirteen-year separation, Soundgarden officially reunited in 2010. Initially focused on live performances, the band soon felt the urge to compose new material. By 2011, they began recording at Seattle's Studio X with producer Adam Kasper. The process was deliberate and independent, as the band had fulfilled their previous label contracts. The resulting album, King Animal, was released on November 13, 2012, serving as a testament to the members' perseverance and enduring creative bond.
The album's aesthetic was heavily influenced by sculptor Josh Graham, whose piece Night of the Last Equinox inspired the cover art. Unlike the darker visuals of their past work, the band requested a lighter palette featuring animal skulls and floral motifs. Musically, the record maintained the band's penchant for complex time signatures, such as the 5/4 rhythm found in By Crooked Steps, while blending heavy, chugging riffs with the mature vocal style of frontman Chris Cornell.
Critics offered a range of perspectives on the comeback. Some reviewers praised the album for its professionalism and for successfully picking up where 1996's Down on the Upside left off. Others felt the material lacked the explosive energy of their earlier classics. Despite these mixed assessments, the album achieved commercial success, reaching the fifth spot on the Billboard 200 in the United States. It remains a significant final chapter for a group widely considered architects of the Seattle music scene.
