In short: Between 1662 and 1683, the Kingdom of Tungning served as a defiant, ethnic Han state on Taiwan. Founded by the Ming loyalist Koxinga after he ousted Dutch colonial forces, this maritime power aimed to restore the fallen Ming dynasty while Sinicizing the island through intensive agricultural development and Confucian education.

The Kingdom of Tungning, also known as the Zheng dynasty, emerged from the wreckage of the Ming collapse. Its founder, Koxinga, was a Ming loyalist who viewed Taiwan as a strategic stronghold to launch counter-attacks against the Manchu-led Qing dynasty. After a grueling siege that ended in January 1662, Koxinga forced the Dutch East India Company to surrender Fort Zeelandia, effectively ending 38 years of Dutch rule. Koxinga’s administration was deeply symbolic, utilizing Ming-style governance and the Yongli calendar to maintain legitimacy, even as the reality of reclaiming the mainland faded.

Under Koxinga’s successor, Zheng Jing, the kingdom shifted from a temporary military base to a permanent, self-sufficient state. Zheng Jing implemented a rigorous Sinicization program, establishing an Imperial Academy in 1665 and a Confucian shrine in 1666. To solve chronic food shortages, the regime instituted a military farm policy, or tuntian, which required soldiers to cultivate land during peacetime. This economic transformation was profound; by 1684, cultivated land had surged to 43,699.7 hectares, more than triple the 12,500 hectares recorded at the end of the Dutch era in 1660.

The expansion of Han Chinese settlement came at a steep cost to indigenous populations. As the Zheng regime pushed into the southern and northern regions, they introduced intensive farming techniques and forced assimilation. Conflicts with tribes like the Saisiyat and the Shalu were devastating, often resulting in mass casualties and the displacement of indigenous communities. While the kingdom was eventually annexed by the Qing in 1683, its legacy as the first predominantly ethnic Han state on the island remains a pivotal chapter in Taiwan’s history, marking the transition from a colonial outpost to a deeply integrated Chinese society.
