In short: Koos de la Rey was a legendary military commander who pioneered trench warfare during the Second Boer War. His sudden death in 1914 at a police roadblock remains a subject of intense historical debate, fueling conspiracy theories and sparking a rebellion that tested the foundations of the young South African state.

Born in 1847, Jacobus Herculaas de la Rey rose to prominence as a Boer leader known for his tactical brilliance and chivalry. During the Second Boer War, he famously introduced trench warfare at the Modder River to neutralize superior British artillery. His defensive victory at Magersfontein in 1899 became a defining moment of his career, where his forces successfully repelled British Highland regiments. Despite his battlefield success, he was a pragmatic advocate for peace, playing a crucial role in the 1902 Treaty of Vereeniging that ended the conflict.

Following the war, De la Rey served as a Senator and supported the unification of South Africa. However, his life took a dark turn at the onset of the First World War. When the government decided to invade German South West Africa, De la Rey opposed the move, fearing it would lead to unnecessary bloodshed. He was caught between his loyalty to his old comrades and his commitment to the state. During this period of high tension, he was influenced by the visions of Siener van Rensburg, who predicted his death.

On 15 September 1914, while traveling to Pretoria to consult with fellow officers who had resigned in protest, De la Rey was shot and killed by police at a roadblock. Authorities claimed the police were searching for a criminal gang, but many Boers were convinced it was a deliberate political assassination. His death served as a catalyst for the Maritz rebellion, an armed uprising against the government. While the rebellion was quickly suppressed, the mystery surrounding his final moments continues to captivate the public imagination, even inspiring popular music over a century later.
