In short: The Korean Wave, or hallyu, describes the explosive rise of South Korean culture since the 1990s. Once restricted by military censorship, the country pivoted to turn pop music, television, and film into a massive economic engine, eventually capturing audiences from East Asia to the Americas through digital platforms.

The origins of hallyu are rooted in the aftermath of the 1997 Asian financial crisis. As South Korea liberalized its entertainment industry, it began exporting cultural products to fill a void in Asian markets, where broadcasters sought cheaper alternatives to expensive Japanese programming. By 2008, the nation's cultural exports officially surpassed its imports, marking a historic shift in its global standing.

This growth occurred in two distinct generations. Hallyu 1.0, spanning the late 1990s to the mid-2000s, was defined by the regional popularity of K-dramas like Winter Sonata and Jewel in the Palace. The second generation, or hallyu 2.0, began around 2008 and was fueled by the internet. Social media and platforms like YouTube allowed K-pop groups such as BTS and Blackpink to bypass traditional gatekeepers, reaching fans directly across the globe.

The South Korean government played a pivotal role in this transition. Moving from a history of strict censorship under military dictatorships—where even foreign influence was treated as a threat—the state eventually embraced cultural commercialization. By 2012, the government estimated the economic value of these cultural exports at US$83.2 billion, cementing the Korean Wave as a vital component of the country's soft power and export-driven economy.

Today, the phenomenon extends far beyond music and television, encompassing webtoons, fashion, and food. The impact is measurable: the number of university students learning Korean in the United States nearly doubled between 2006 and 2016. From the success of the Oscar-winning film Parasite to the global dominance of K-pop, the Korean Wave has fundamentally reshaped how the world consumes contemporary media.
