The man who paved the way for Belgian tennis history
In short: Before Belgium became a consistent force on the global tennis stage, Kristof Vliegen was breaking ground. By reaching a historic milestone in 2006, he helped redefine what was possible for his nation's athletes, transitioning from a gritty competitor to a high-level architect of modern talent.
In May 2006, Kristof Vliegen achieved a landmark moment in Belgian sports history. By reaching the final of the ATP tournament in Munich, he set up the first-ever all-Belgian men's singles final against Olivier Rochus. This milestone served as a foundational moment for the country's tennis presence on the international circuit, proving that Belgian players could compete at the highest levels simultaneously. This achievement occurred during a pivotal year for his career. He also reached the semifinals in Chennai earlier that same season.
Vliegen's professional journey was defined by steady progression through diverse global tournaments. In 2006 alone, he reached the semifinals in Chennai and competed as the 30th seed at Wimbledon, where he faced Nicolas Mahut. His season also included notable performances in Doha and the SA Tennis Open, where he secured victories against players like Ross Hutchins and Jan Minář before falling to top-tier opponents such as Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. He faced Italian Simone Bolelli at the Australian open. In Marseille, he played against Czech Jan Hernych.
Following his playing career, Vliegen pivoted to coaching, applying his experience to develop the next generation of talent. He spent a significant tenure coaching Zizou Bergs until May 2025. Most recently, he began working with Alex Michelsen in October 2025, continuing his role as a mentor for contemporary athletes. His career began in 1982. He is a former professional player now working as a coach.
While often associated by name with fellow Belgian player Joran Vliegen, Kristof is not related to him. His legacy remains rooted in the transition from an individual competitor who navigated the grueling ATP and Challenger circuits to a strategic coach shaping the future of the sport. He has worked with several different athletes over the years. His records are archived on official Davis Cup sites.
