The 1905 battle that foreshadowed the carnage of World War I
In short: Explore the Battle of Mukden, the largest land engagement before 1914. This documentary examines how a massive clash between two empires exposed the devastating reality of modern industrial warfare.
In 1905, more than 600,000 men faced off in a conflict that signaled a shift in global power. General Aleksey Kuropatkin established a massive Russian defensive front supported by three armies and heavy artillery. To break it, Marshal Oyama Iwao utilized a deception to draw Russian reserves eastward while General Nogi Maresuke swept around the western flank.
Despite Russia's numerical advantages, the battle devolved into a chaotic retreat characterized by failed counterattacks and confused orders. While the Japanese army faced extreme exhaustion, the scale of the fighting—featuring entrenched positions and heavy guns—served as a precursor to the trench warfare of the coming Great War. The outcome helped shake the foundations of imperial Russia, contributing to the first Russian Revolution.
