The Confederate ship that fired the Civil War's final shots in the Arctic
In short: While Robert E. Lee surrendered his army in April 1865, a Confederate commerce raider was still hunting American ships in the frozen North. They didn't realize the war was over until they were thousands of miles away, having already sunk dozens of vessels in a final, desperate spree.
The CSS Shenandoah serves as one of history's most striking examples of information lag. In June 1865, while the Confederacy had already collapsed on land, this cruiser was operating near the Bering Strait. On June 22, 1865, the crew fired the final shots of the American Civil War while pursuing a whaling ship from New Bedford, Massachusetts. They were so isolated that they remained unaware of Lee's surrender at Appomattox until August.
During this final month of active conflict, the Shenandoah achieved a staggering rate of destruction. In just one week, the crew sank 24 American merchant vessels. Between October 1864 and June 1865, the raider had sunk or captured a total of 38 enemy ships. The captain estimated the bounty of these captures to be nearly $1 million—a sum that would exceed $18 million in today's currency.
The realization of their situation turned from victory to terror. Once news of the Confederate defeat reached them, the crew realized they were no longer legitimate combatants but fugitives facing potential execution. This shifted their objective from commerce raiding to survival. They embarked on a grueling 17,000-mile nonstop sail to Liverpool, England, completing the journey in just three months. The CSS Shenandoah ultimately became the last organized unit of the Confederacy to surrender, finally yielding to the British government in November 1865.
On 22 June 1865, the CSS Shenandoah discharged the Civil War's concluding rounds.
Robert E. Lee surrendered on April 9, 1865, two and a half months before the ship's last actions.
The Shenandoah traveled 17,000 miles in three months to reach Liverpool.
