In short: Before he was an NBA All-Star, Larry Johnson’s career was nearly derailed by a dispute over a standardized test score. He went from junior college standout to a first-overall draft pick, eventually signing a record-breaking deal that changed the economics of professional basketball forever.

Larry Johnson’s ascent was anything but linear. After a dispute with Southern Methodist University administration regarding the legitimacy of an SAT score, the Texas native enrolled at Odessa College. He reached an unparalleled milestone there, earning NJCAA Division 1 Player of the Year honours during his first two seasons, including a sophomore average exceeding 29 points.

His dominance continued at UNLV under coach Jerry Tarkanian. In 1990, Johnson helped lead the Runnin' Rebels to an NCAA championship, a game defined by a 103–73 victory over Duke and record-setting margins. By 1991, he had swept the major collegiate honors, including the John R. After receiving the Naismith College Player of the Year and Wooden Awards, the Charlotte Hornets picked him first in the 1991 NBA draft.

In the NBA, Johnson became a cultural icon known as 'Grandmama.' In October 1993, he signed a 12-year, $84 million contract with the Hornets, which was the most lucrative deal in league history at the time. While back injuries eventually forced him to adapt his explosive style into a more perimeter-oriented game, he remained a high-impact force, notably delivering a pivotal four-playing winning shot for the New York Knicks in the 1999 Eastern Conference Finals.

Beyond the court, Johnson’s career was marked by intense physicality and social commentary. He was a central figure in several high-profile NBA brawls, including confrontations with the Miami Heat. He also used his platform to speak on the systemic struggles facing his community, famously critiquing the disparity between individual professional success and the realities of life in his home neighborhood.
