The Austrian club that broke the Vienna monopoly on football glory
In short: For decades, Austrian football was a Viennese playground. Then came LASK. From a 1908 garage-born startup to a club that survived bankruptcy and a fleeing president, LASK eventually shattered the capital's dominance, becoming the first non-Viennese team to seize the national championship.
Founded in the winter of 1908 by Albert Siems, LASK began as a football branch of a heavy athletics club. While many modern clubs are defined by corporate branding, LASK remains a rarity in the Austrian higher divisions: it has never featured a sponsor in its official name. This identity persisted even through a turbulent 20th century, including a 1940 debut in the Gauliga Ostmark and a period of professional struggle that saw them relegated in 1954.
The club's defining moment arrived in 1965. By winning the Austrian football championship, LASK became the first team outside of Vienna to break the capital's stranglehold on the title. That same year, they completed a domestic double by winning the Austrian Cup, a feat that cemented their status as a regional powerhouse. They repeated this historic domestic double in the 2025–26 season, securing the Bundesliga title with a 3–0 away win against Austria Wien.
LASK's journey has been marked by extreme volatility. In 1995, a financial crisis saw the president flee to the Ivory Coast with large sums of money, leaving the club in debt. They survived a 1997 merger with city rivals FC Linz and a 2013 collapse where players received no salary and the team played 50 km away from their home city. Today, they play at the Raiffeisen Arena, a symbol of a club that refused to dissolve despite being on the verge of extinction.
