In short: Laura Dekker spent her childhood at sea, but her dream of a solo circumnavigation triggered a fierce legal battle. Dutch authorities attempted to block her voyage, citing safety concerns and her age. After a year of court interventions, she finally set sail, proving her capability on the open ocean.

Born in New Zealand during a seven-year family sailing trip, Laura Dekker was practically raised on the water. By age six, she was already sailing her own dinghy. Her ambition to circumnavigate the globe solo was fueled by reading Tania Aebi’s memoir, Maiden Voyage. However, when she announced her plans in 2009, the Dutch Child Welfare Office intervened, placing her under shared custody to prevent her departure.

The legal struggle lasted until July 2010, when a family court finally ruled that the decision rested with her parents. Dekker officially began her journey on 21 August 2010, at age 14, aboard her 12.4-metre ketch, Guppy. The voyage was not without its challenges; she navigated the Panama Canal, crossed the Equator, and faced the complexities of the Indian Ocean, often managing maintenance and customs procedures entirely on her own.

Throughout the 518-day journey, Dekker maintained a weekly column for the Algemeen Dagblad, providing a window into the life of a solo sailor. While some critics questioned her commitment to her studies via the Wereldschool, she remained focused on the technical demands of her route. She arrived in Sint Maarten on 21 January 2012, successfully completing her goal at age 16.

The experience left Dekker with a perspective that clashed with the authorities who had once tried to stop her. She later remarked that those who feared her journey simply did not understand boats. By the time she finished, the initial skepticism of the sailing press had turned into acclaim, marking a historic achievement in solo maritime navigation.
