The English winger who broke the gates of football in Europe
In short: Rejected by Arsenal for a style that didn't fit, Laurie Cunningham went on to become the first English player to sign for Real Madrid. His journey from London's streets to Spanish glory helped transform the racial landscape of the English top flight forever.
In 1972, a young Cunningham was released by Arsenal because his individualistic style was deemed incompatible with the club's 'give and go' tactics. However, his move to West Bromwich Albion in 1977 marked the beginning of a transformative era. Alongside teammates Cyrille Regis and Brendon Batson, he formed a legendary trio known as the 'Three Degrees'—a name inspired by the American soul group. This group was the second instance of a top-flight English side fielding three black players simultaneously, following a 1972 West Ham United lineup.
Cunningham's impact extended far beyond the English leagues. In 1979, he made a historic £950,000 transfer to Real Madrid, becoming the first English player to join the Spanish giants. During his five years in Madrid, he secured one La Liga title and two Copa del Rey trophies. While his time in Spain was marked by significant injury struggles—including a broken toe and a thigh injury that sidelined him for much of the 1981–82 season—his talent remained undeniable, evidenced by his scoring exploits in the European Cup and UEFA Cup.
His career was a mosaic of European football, with spells at Marseille in France, Rayo Vallecano in Spain, and even a brief period in Belgium with Charleroi. Despite the physical toll of injuries, he achieved a final moment of triumph in 1988, winning the FA Cup with Wimbledon's 'Crazy Gang'. Though he was one of the first black players to earn full England caps between 1979 and 1980, his life was tragically cut short in a car accident in Madrid in 1989 at the age of 33.
