The German defender who won the Premier League with two different clubs
In short: Robert Huth's career was defined by physical resilience and a nomadic journey through English football. From struggling for minutes at Chelsea to becoming a cornerstone of Leicester City’s historic title win, his path illustrates how a reliable veteran can become the ultimate glue for a championship squad.
Born in East Berlin, Robert Huth moved to England as a teenager, joining Chelsea's youth system in 2001. Despite making his debut at just 17 years old, he found it difficult to break into the first team due to established stars like John Terry and William Gallas. This led to a significant career shift in 2006 when he joined Middlesbrough for £6 million. His early years there were marred by persistent injuries, including a stress fracture and multiple ankle issues that required surgery.
Huth's career reached a new peak at Stoke City, where he signed in 2009 for £5 million. During the 2010–11 season, he became a standout performer, earning Player of the Year honors after scoring nine goals in a single season—a first for a Stoke defender. However, his journey remained volatile; he faced disciplinary issues, including an FA suspension for punching an opponent and various red cards, while also battling health scares like viral meningitis during a pre-season tour.
The defining chapter of Huth's career began in 2015 when he joined Leicester City. Initially on loan to help the club avoid relegation, his presence was instrumental in their survival. He then signed permanently and became a vital part of the squad that defied 5,000–1 odds to win the Premier League title in 2016. By winning the trophy with both Chelsea and Leicester, he joined an elite group of only seven players to achieve such a feat with two different clubs.
After retiring in 2019 following a series of debilitating foot and ankle injuries, Huth transitioned into the administrative side of the sport. He spent time studying sporting directorship in Germany before returning to Leicester City in October 2022 to serve as their loans manager.
