Can you relive the past without changing the future?
In short: In the Chinese donghua series Link Click, two partners use photographs to travel back in time. They navigate the heavy emotions of others, operating under a strict, high-stakes rule: they have only twelve hours to find answers, and they must leave the past exactly as they found it.
The series follows Cheng Xiaoshi and Lu Guang, the operators of the Moment of Time Photo Studio. Their supernatural abilities are deeply interconnected. Cheng Xiaoshi can enter a photograph to inhabit the identity of the photographer, absorbing their memories and emotions. Meanwhile, Lu Guang possesses the ability to retrace the events within a photo's timeframe, which extends up to 12 hours after the image was captured. During these excursions, Lu Guang maintains a telepathic link with Xiaoshi, guiding him through the past.
The narrative tension relies on a delicate balance of power and restraint. While Xiaoshi's actions within a photo have the potential to affect the timeline, the duo operates under the fundamental principle of leaving historical events unchanged. This creates a procedural element to their work, as they accept requests from various clients—ranging from a police captain investigating a murder to a person seeking a lost recipe—to help resolve lingering regrets.
Since its first season premiered on April 30, 2021, the franchise has expanded significantly through various media. Beyond the animated episodes, the world of Link Click has been explored through an audio drama released in November 2022, a stage musical that premiered in November 2023, and even a live-action drama announcement in June 2023. Even the music reflects the show's core mechanics; for instance, the season two opening theme, 'Vortex,' features reversed lyrics to mirror the theme of reversing time.
