Can love bloom when your past is a complete blank?
In short: After a traumatic fall from a bridge, Banri Tada wakes up with severe retrograde amnesia. He has lost all memories of his life before the accident, including his high school years and his relationship with his best friend, Linda. Now a law student in Tokyo, he must navigate a new reality.
The Golden Time series, written by Yuyuko Takemiya and illustrated by Eiji Komatsu, explores the intersection of romantic comedy and supernatural themes. The narrative follows Banri Tada, a freshman at a private law school in Tokyo who suffered a fall from a bridge following his high school graduation. This accident resulted in severe retrograde amnesia, causing him to miss one year of school due to hospitalization.
As Banri attempts to rebuild his life, he encounters Kōko Kaga, a beautiful and obsessive woman who has been determined to marry her childhood friend, Mitsuo Yanagisawa. While Kōko eventually falls for Banri, the protagonist's re-emerging memories often clash with his new relationship. This tension is heightened by the presence of Linda, a second-year student who was Banri's best friend in high school and carries immense guilt over the accident.
The complexity of the story is further layered by the presence of Banri's spirit, a being who died at age 18 and possesses all his pre-accident memories. This spirit watches over Banri, observing how he focuses on Kōko even while the spirit remains in love with Linda. The series has seen significant success, with The Mainichi Shimbun reporting sales of over 710,000 copies in Japan as of March 2013.
ASCII Media Works released this eight-volume light novel series alongside three extra books from September 10, 2010, until March 10, 2014. The franchise expanded into a manga adaptation by Umechazuke and a 24-episode anime produced by J.C.Staff, which aired on MBS between October 2013 and March 2014.
