The first king of England was not who you think he was
In short: History often simplifies the origins of the English monarchy, but the title of first king is fiercely debated. While Alfred the Great laid the foundation, it took his grandson Æthelstan to truly unify the realm. From disputed claimants to forgotten queens, the path to the British throne was rarely straightforward.
The identity of England's first king remains a subject of historical revision. Popular narratives often point to early figures like Offa of Mercia or Egbert of Wessex, yet modern historians largely reject these claims. Offa, for instance, sought power rather than national unity, leaving behind a reputation rather than a lasting political structure. It was Alfred the Great who established the House of Wessex as the dominant force in the late 9th century, styling himself King of the Anglo-Saxons while ruling only a portion of the territory.
True unification arrived in 927 when Æthelstan conquered Northumbria, becoming the first monarch to rule the entirety of England. His reign solidified the title Rex Anglorum, or King of the English. This lineage faced constant turbulence, including the Danish invasions under Sweyn Forkbeard and the subsequent rule of Cnut the Great. The Norman Conquest of 1066 further reshaped the monarchy, as William the Conqueror established a new order, moving the capital from Winchester to London and initiating a period where the crown was frequently contested by rival houses.
Dynastic shifts were often defined by conflict and complex legal maneuvering. The Angevins, later known as the Plantagenets, initially prioritized their vast continental empire over their English holdings. Later, the Wars of the Roses saw the throne oscillate between the houses of Lancaster and York until the Tudors emerged. Even the concept of a sovereign English state eventually dissolved in 1707, when the Acts of Union merged England and Scotland into the Kingdom of Great Britain, ending the era of the independent English monarchy.
