How have humans historically expressed their deepest anxieties about death and the unknown?
In short: Jill Cook explores the diverse ways humanity has confronted the fear of mortality and the afterlife. This overview highlights the themes of an exhibition that examines how people across different cultures and eras have sought to make sense of the unknown.
The exhibition, titled Living with gods: peoples, places and worlds beyond, investigates the various methods humans have employed to articulate their fears regarding death and the mysteries of existence. By looking at artifacts and cultural practices, it provides a window into how societies have historically navigated the anxieties surrounding the end of life.
Running from 2 November 2017 to 8 April 2018 at The British Museum, the project was supported by the Genesis Foundation and John Studzinski CBE. It also serves as a companion to a BBC Radio 4 series presented by Neil MacGregor.
