Why do water serpents and dragons dominate global mythology and belief systems?

Living with gods: water serpents · 6:48 · Video: The British Museum · Watch at the source

In short: Across diverse cultures, serpents and dragons are consistently linked to water. Professor Veronica Strang explores the prevalence of these creatures in world mythology, examining why these aquatic beasts hold such a significant place in human belief systems.

The exhibition 'Living with gods: peoples, places and worlds beyond' highlights the recurring motif of serpents and dragons as symbols connected to water. By examining these figures, the collection investigates how different societies integrate these powerful creatures into their spiritual and cultural landscapes.

This exploration was part of a broader project held from 2 November 2017 to 8 April 2018 at The British Museum, supported by the Genesis Foundation. The content also complements a BBC Radio 4 series hosted by Neil MacGregor.
