In short: When the financial firm Aspiration collapsed, its bankruptcy records inadvertently exposed a massive scheme to bypass NBA salary cap rules. What appeared to be a simple business failure actually revealed a sophisticated network of no-show endorsement deals designed to funnel millions to superstar Kawhi Leonard.

The scandal erupted in September 2025, when journalist Pablo Torre revealed that the Los Angeles Clippers had bypassed the league's collective bargaining agreement. The investigation found that the team arranged 'no-show' endorsement contracts with various firms to provide Kawhi Leonard with tens of millions in off-court income. One primary example involved the now-bankrupt firm Aspiration, which reportedly provided Leonard with a $28 million, four-year deal in 2021, alongside $20 million in company stock.

A yearlong probe by the law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen and Katz confirmed significant circumvention. The investigation uncovered that the Clippers induced companies like Daktronics—the builder of the Intuit Dome scoreboard—to enter into these deals as a precondition for receiving large team contracts. Other implicated firms included Boingo Wireless and Lockton, which together had paid Leonard over $18 million by August 2021. The firm also used 'consulting' fees to fund these sham payments.

The fallout was unprecedented. In September 2026, the NBA handed down the most severe penalties in league history: a $30 million fine, the loss of five first-round draft picks, and a five-year compliance monitoring program. Owner Steve Ballmer, President Gillian Zucker, and Basketball Operations President Lawrence Frank all received suspensions. While the Clippers denied many allegations, the league's findings pointed to institutional failures and a deliberate effort to circumvent the cap through third-party business relationships.
