How a professional basketball player orchestrated his own downfall through a high-stakes betting scheme
In short: Jontay Porter, once a promising NBA talent, saw his career collapse after a gambling scandal involving secret bets and feigned injuries. By manipulating his own performance to satisfy massive debts, he became the first active player in decades to be permanently banned from the league and face federal prison time.
Jontay Porter’s path to professional basketball began with high expectations, including a standout high school career in Seattle and a collegiate stint at the University of Missouri. However, persistent knee injuries hampered his trajectory, leading to a series of short-term contracts across the NBA and G League. By the time he joined the Toronto Raptors in 2023, Porter was struggling with significant gambling debts, a vulnerability that eventually drew the attention of predatory associates.
The scandal centered on proposition bets—wagers placed on specific player statistics rather than game outcomes. Porter was coerced by Brooklyn gambler Ammar Awawdeh and four co-conspirators into intentionally underperforming. To ensure these bets hit, Porter would feign injuries or illness to exit games early, keeping his statistical output below the agreed-upon benchmarks. The scheme reached a breaking point during a March 20, 2024, game against the Sacramento Kings, when an $80,000 parlay bet triggered an investigation by sportsbooks and the NBA.
The fallout was swift and severe. In April 2024, the NBA issued a lifetime ban, the first of its kind for an active player since 1954. Beyond the league's sanctions, Porter faced federal charges in the United States, pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud in July 2024. He faces a potential prison sentence of 41 to 51 months. The league also introduced the 'Jontay Porter Rule' to restrict betting on players signed to two-way or 10-day contracts, aiming to prevent similar manipulation in the future.
Despite the permanent NBA ban and his legal troubles, Porter returned to professional basketball in 2026, signing with the Seattle Super Hawks in the United States Basketball League. His debut performance—a triple-double—helped lead the team to a championship in the league's inaugural season. His case remains a cautionary tale of how financial desperation and the rapid expansion of sports betting can intersect to compromise the integrity of professional sports.
