From a scholarship uncertainty to a national championship hero
In short: Before he was a standout in the international basketball circuit, Luke Maye faced an uncertain future at the University of North Carolina. A clutch shot in the Elite Eight and a viral moment of dedication transformed him from a bench player into a college basketball icon.
Luke Maye’s journey at the University of North Carolina began with significant ambiguity. When he first committed to the Tar Heels, he did so without knowing if a scholarship would be provided. This uncertainty ended only when head coach Roy Williams confirmed he would receive full financial support. While his freshman year saw limited playing time, Maye’s sophomore season provided a dramatic turning point during the 2017 NCAA Tournament.
During the tournament, Maye emerged as a high-stakes performer. In the Elite Eight matchup against Kentucky, he scored a career-high 17 points and sank a game-winning jump shot with just 0.3 seconds remaining on the clock. This performance, following a crucial three-pointer by Malik Monk that tied the game at 73, earned Maye the South Regional Most Outstanding Player award. His impact was matched by his discipline; a video of him attending an 8:00 am class the next morning quickly went viral, cementing his reputation.
Maye’s collegiate career peaked during his junior season (2017–18), where he averaged 20.8 points and 10.3 rebounds in his first nine games—the most impressive start for a Tar Heel since Tyler Hansbrough in 2008–09. After briefly considering the NBA draft in April 2018, he returned for a senior season where he averaged 14.9 points and 10.5 rebounds. Following stints with the Milwaukee Bucks organization and the Wisconsin Herd, Maye transitioned to a global career, playing for clubs in Italy, Spain, and Turkey, and currently competing for the Chiba Jets in Japan.
