From a heated confrontation with Russell Crowe to Super League stardom
In short: Rugby league star Luke Keary has navigated a career defined by premiership glory, significant injuries, and high-profile friction. After a decade of dominance in the NRL, his recent move to France has sparked a controversial debate about the future of the global game.
Luke Keary’s professional journey is marked by elite success and intense interpersonal drama. While playing for the South Sydney Rabbitohs, Keary was part of their 2014 NRL Premiership-winning squad. His tenure there included a notable 2015 incident at the farm of club co-owner Russell Crowe. During a pre-season session, a confrontation erupted after Crowe berated several younger players, including Keary. The dispute escalated when Keary defended his teammates, leading Crowe to tell him he was not worth his contract value. The tension resulted in Keary leaving the property via taxi in the early hours of the morning.
Keary later moved to the Sydney Roosters, where he achieved even greater individual and collective heights. He earned the Clive Churchill Medal following the Roosters' 2018 Grand Final victory over the Melbourne Storm and secured back-to-back premierships in 2018 and 2019. Despite facing significant physical setbacks—including a broken jaw in 2018, a season-ending ACL injury in 2021, and various concussions—he remained a pivotal figure in the competition, eventually representing both Australia and Ireland at the international level.
His transition to the Super League with the Catalans Dragons in 2025 has brought new friction to the sport. In May 2025, Keary criticized the state of the Super League, describing the product and coverage as 'near unwatchable' and suggesting the competition is in a desperate state. He even claimed that NRL players are open to a takeover of the league. These 'over-dramatic' comments, as described by Rugby League Commercial's Rhodri Jones, have placed Keary at the center of a heated discussion regarding the commercial viability and future integration of the world's premier rugby league competitions.
