The Roman Emperor who never visited Rome and faced a total erasure of history
In short: Macrinus was the first Roman emperor to hail from the equestrian class and the first to never set foot in Rome during his reign. Rising from Berber origins to praetorian prefect, he seized power after orchestrating the murder of Caracalla, only to be overthrown by a teenager and erased from history.
Born in Caesarea around 165, Macrinus was a career bureaucrat of Berber descent who ascended through the ranks to become praetorian prefect under Emperor Caracalla. Fearing for his life after a prophecy suggested he would depose his leader, Macrinus allegedly recruited a soldier to assassinate Caracalla in April 217. With the army's backing, he claimed the throne, though his lack of senatorial status and his decision to remain in Antioch throughout his reign alienated the Roman elite.
Inheriting a bankrupt empire, Macrinus attempted to stabilize the economy by curbing the military's excessive pay increases and revaluing the denarius to mirror the fiscal policies of Septimius Severus. While he successfully negotiated peace with Parthia, Armenia, and Dacia, these reforms sparked deep resentment among the legions. His vulnerability was exploited by Julia Maesa, who championed her grandson, the fourteen-year-old Elagabalus, as the rightful heir to Caracalla. The ensuing rebellion culminated in the Battle of Antioch in June 218, where Macrinus was defeated.
Following his capture and execution in Cappadocia, the Senate enacted a damnatio memoriae, a severe sanction designed to erase his existence. His name was struck from public records, his statues were defaced, and his coins were systematically destroyed. His young son and co-emperor, Diadumenianus, met a similar fate, being captured and killed while attempting to flee. This total rejection by the state serves as a stark reminder of how quickly the Roman political order could turn against an outsider who failed to secure the loyalty of the military and the approval of the Senate.
