How an Achilles injury transformed a young outfielder into a premier goalkeeper
In short: At age ten, Mads Hermansen faced a physical setback that would redefine his entire career. What began as a struggle with Achilles tendinitis forced a fundamental shift in his position, eventually leading him from the Danish leagues to the heights of the Premier League.
The trajectory of Madram Hermansen's career was altered by a medical necessity. While playing as an outfielder in his youth at Næsby, a bout of Achilles tendinitis prompted him to transition to the goalkeeper position. This pivot proved successful, as he moved to Brøndby in September 2015 and eventually rose to become a prominent figure in Danish and English football. Before joining Brøndby, he spent his early developmental years honing his craft at Næsby.
Hermansen's rise was marked by significant milestones, including a professional debut for Brøndby in November 2020 and a role in their 2020–21 championship season. His ability to act as a 'ball-playing goalkeeper'—a role characterized by using precise passing to dictate play and create space—became a hallmark of his style under managers like Enzo Maresca at Leicester City. His impressive performances throughout the campaign led to his inclusion in the 2023–24 EFL Championship Team of the Season. During his time at Brøndby, he served as a backup to the German keeper Marvin Schwäbe. He was also honored as the club's Player of the Year in 2022.
Beyond his distribution, Hermansen has developed a reputation as a penalty specialist, notably saving a triple penalty against FC Nordsjælland in 2023. His international career has progressed through the Danish youth ranks to the senior squad, where he earned his debut in a 4–0 victory against North Macedonia in March 2026. Following a high-profile move to West Ham United in August 2025 for a reported £20 million, he continues to test his capabilities at the highest level of the game. His international journey includes representing Denmark at every youth level from under-16 to under-21. He also earned his first under-21 call-up in November 2020.
