The record-breaking trajectory of a pop music titan
In short: Mariah Carey holds a unique distinction in music history: she was the first and only artist to have her first five singles reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Her career is defined by massive commercial peaks, enduring holiday classics, and a resilient comeback that redefined her trajectory.
Carey's early career was marked by an unprecedented level of dominance. Between 1990 and 1991, she achieved a streak of five consecutive number-one singles, a feat that remains a singular milestone in the Billboard Hot 100. This period of rapid ascent included hits like "Vision of Love" and "Someday." However, this streak eventually broke with her single "Can't Let Go," which peaked at number two. Her international reach expanded significantly in 1993 with her cover of "Without You," which secured number-one positions across several European countries.
The 1990s and early 2000s saw Carey balance massive commercial success with periods of commercial cooling. During 1995, she teamed up with Boyz II Men for "One Sweet Day", a track which occupied the Hot 100's peak for a remarkable sixteen weeks, maintaining the longest stay at number one until 2019. While her 2001 and 2002 releases, "Glitter" and "Charmbracelet," failed to gain significant traction, she eventually staged a major commercial comeback in 2005 with "The Emancipation of Mimi." The lead single, "We Belong Together," topped the Hot 100 for 14 weeks and was cited as the most successful song of the 2000s decade.
Carey's discography is also defined by longevity and specific cultural staples. Her 1994 holiday single "All I Want for Christmas Is You" has become a perennial classic, topping the Hot 100 every Christmas season from 2019 to 2025. The single "Type Dangerous" helped her achieve a 50-entry Hot 100 milestone by 2025. As a solo performer, she has secured 19 number-one hits, a historical maximum, backed by 17.2 million physical units and 13.8 million digital downloads sold within the US by 2009.
