From Licensed Pirate to Knighted Explorer of the Arctic

Martin Frobisher: Explorer, Privateer and Pirate · 11:52 · Video: The History Guy: History Deserves to Be Remembered · Watch at the source

In short: Discover the turbulent life of Martin Frobisher, an Elizabethan adventurer whose career spanned from plundering French ships to charting the icy reaches of North America. This video explores how a man who nearly ended up in debtor's prison became a key figure in early Canadian history.

Before he was a famed explorer, Martin Frobisher was an active privateer—a 'lawful pirate' authorized by the English crown to seize enemy treasure. In the 1560s, he gained a reputation for preying on French trading vessels off the coast of Africa, even facing several arrests on piracy charges.

In the 1570s, Frobisher pivoted to exploration, seeking the fabled Northwest Passage to reach Asian spice markets. While his expeditions failed to find a navigable route and bankrupted many investors, he successfully charted Labrador and what is now known as Frobisher Bay. He eventually died in 1594 after being wounded while attacking a Spanish fortress in France. The video provides historical context on how Frobisher navigated the complex world of Elizabethan maritime life, moving between piracy, merchant trade, and state-sponsored exploration.
