The volcanic midfielder who chose France over Morocco
In short: From the Paris Saint-Germain academy to the World Cup final, Mattéo Guendouzi's career is defined by intensity. Known for a 'volcanic' personality and a fierce hatred of losing, the midfielder has navigated high-stakes transfers and international dilemmas to become a mainstay for France.
Born on 14 April 1999 in a suburb of Paris, Mattéo Guendouzi's journey through elite football began at the Paris Saint-Germain academy at age six. While his coach Sébastien Thierry noted he wasn't the strongest technically at 14, he possessed exceptional vision, endurance, and a leadership mentality. After moving to Lorient's academy in 2014, he rose to the first team in 2016, making his professional debut against Nantes on 15 October 2016.
Guendouzi's career has been marked by high-profile moves and intense temperament. After joining Arsenal in 2018 for a fee believed to be around £7 million, his time in London was complicated by disciplinary issues, including an exclusion from training following an altercation with Brighton's Neal Maupay in June 2020. His 'volcanic' personality, as described by Emmanuel Petit, stems from a deep-seated refusal to accept draws or losses, a trait that has seen him through successful stints at Marseille and Lazio.
On the international stage, Guendouzi faced a pivotal decision in 2017. Despite being approached by Morocco manager Hervé Renard to represent his father's Moroccan heritage, Guendouzi chose to remain with France. He earned his first senior cap on 16 November 2021 and later played a role in the French squad that finished as runners-up in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. His career continues to evolve, moving from Serie A to the Turkish Süper Lig with Fenerbahçe in early 2026.
