In short: Few players navigate the highs of Premier League goals and the lows of relegation with such resilience. After a professional career spanning clubs from Portsmouth to Newcastle, Matt Ritchie has traded his boots for a seat in the boardroom, beginning a new chapter in football management.

Born in Gosport in 1989, Matt Ritchie’s footballing journey began in the Portsmouth academy at age thirteen. His early career was defined by a series of impactful loans, notably at Dagenham & Redbridge and Swindon Town. At Swindon, his talent became undeniable; despite the club's relegation to League Two, he was named Player of the Season and earned a place in the PFA League Two Team of the Year for the 2011–12 campaign.

Ritchie’s ability to perform in high-stakes environments saw him rise through the divisions. A £400,000 move to Bournemouth in 2013 placed him at the heart of a side that eventually topped the Championship. His individual brilliance during the 2014–15 season, which included 11 goals and 13 assists by April, earned him international recognition. Though born in England, he qualified for Scotland through his father, Alex, making his senior debut in March 2015.

His tenure at Newcastle United, which began in July 2016, showcased his clinical nature from the penalty spot, where he maintained a 100% success rate across five conversions. Even as injuries and international withdrawals marked his later years, his impact remained. Following a second spell at his boyhood club, Portsmouth, and a final stint at Reading, Ritchie announced his retirement from professional football on 8 June 2026. On that same day, he returned to Bournemouth, not as a player, but as the club's technical director.
