The consigliere of the PayPal Mafia who built a multi-billion dollar credit empire
In short: Max Levchin, a Kyiv-born engineer, helped define the modern internet through PayPal’s anti-fraud systems and the early CAPTCHA. Beyond his role in the legendary PayPal Mafia, he has spent decades founding and funding companies that bridge the gap between complex data, financial technology, and the future of consumer credit.
Born in 1975 in the Ukrainian SSR, Levchin moved to Chicago in 1991. His early career was defined by rapid innovation in the nascent digital economy. In 1998, he co-founded Confinity with Peter Thiel, which developed the payment product PayPal. Levchin’s technical focus on anti-fraud measures and his co-creation of the Gausebeck-Levchin test—an early commercial CAPTCHA—were instrumental to the company's success. When eBay acquired PayPal in 2002, Levchin’s 2.3% stake was valued at approximately $34 million.
Following PayPal, Levchin became a central figure in Silicon Valley's venture ecosystem. He founded the media-sharing service Slide, which Google acquired for $182 million in 2010. He later launched HVF, an incubator for data-heavy projects, which spun out the credit network Affirm in 2012. By the time Affirm went public, his stake was valued at roughly $2.5 billion. His influence extends to board roles at companies like Yelp and Yahoo, and he is a prolific angel investor in startups ranging from Stripe to Pinterest.
Levchin’s career is marked by a distinct approach to both technology and public policy. He was the first Silicon Valley executive appointed to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau advisory board in 2015, later advocating for closer ties between tech and regulators. While he has supported lobbying efforts for high-skilled immigration, he has also held contrarian views, such as defending the NSA during 2013 surveillance controversies. Today, his net worth is estimated at $3 billion, and he continues to shape the industry through the Levchin Prize for cryptography and his ongoing work in fintech.
