From student council suggestions to stopping the moon's descent
In short: Between 2009 and 2013, Nisio Isin and Akira Akatsuki's Medaka Box captivated readers with a wild escalation of stakes. What began as a student council addressing academy requests transformed into a saga involving superhuman experiments, ancient beings, and a literal lunar catastrophe.
Serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump, the series follows Medaka Kurokami, a charismatic student elected with 98% of the vote at Hakoniwa Academy. Alongside her childhood friend Zenkichi Hitoyoshi, Medaka manages a suggestion box to improve the school, but the narrative quickly shifts from administrative duties to high-stakes conflict. The Student Council eventually uncovers the 'Flask Plan,' a clandestine project by the academy chairman designed to use forced experimentation on 'Normal' students to create 'Abnormals' with superhuman abilities.
The power dynamics of the academy expand through various challenges, including a tournament initiated by Misogi Kumagawa. This conflict introduces 'Not Equals,' a group of students even more powerful than Abnormals. The narrative tension scales significantly as the characters face Anshin'in, a leader whose true aim is to manipulate Zenkichi into usurping Medaka's presidency. The story eventually reaches cosmic proportions, involving a 5,000-year-old being named Iihiko Shishime and a moment where Medaka must prevent the moon from crashing into Earth.
Beyond the manga, the franchise expanded into several light novel series between 2012 and 2013, including spin-offs like 'Good Loser Kumagawa.' An anime adaptation by Gainax aired two 12-episode seasons in 2012. By 2013, the series had achieved significant commercial success, with over 5 million copies in circulation. The saga concludes with Medaka leaving the academy to lead the Kurokami Group conglomerate, only to return years later to reunite with Zenkichi.
