Born from a visual novel, Melty Blood became a cult classic of fighting games.
In short: What began as a dōjin project in 2002 evolved into a sophisticated fighting game series known for its complex movement and unique Moon system. By blending visual novel storytelling with high-speed, air-heavy combat, the series defied its humble origins to earn a dedicated following and a place at major international tournaments.
Melty Blood emerged from the collaboration between dōjin circles Type-Moon and French-Bread, initially conceived as a meta-sequel to the visual novel Tsukihime. Announced in October 2001 at the Tsukihime-focused convention Tsukihime Matsuri Himehajime, the project faced early hurdles; the developers struggled to adapt the original characters into a fighting game format while maintaining the aesthetic integrity requested by writer Kinoko Nasu. Their commitment to quality was intense, with the team aiming for animation frames that exceeded the standards set by Street Fighter III.
The series is defined by its mechanical depth, particularly its freedom of movement and the Moon system. Players can execute complex maneuvers like double jumps and air dashes, while the Moon system—pioneered in the original series—allows for three distinct character variants based on lunar phases, drastically altering movesets and gameplay feel. Later entries, such as the 2021 release Melty Blood: Type Lumina, introduced a rebooted timeline and modernized mechanics, including Moon Skills and Moon Drive, blending the series' legacy with the gameplay sensibilities of French-Bread's Under Night In-Birth.
Beyond its technical systems, the series holds a storied place in fighting game history. It transitioned from a PC-exclusive dōjin title to arcade hardware, with versions like Act Cadenza and Actress Again appearing at prestigious events like Tougeki and the Evolution Championship Series. Despite its niche beginnings, the series has maintained a long-term appeal; as one review noted, its core mechanics have aged into a supreme fighter that rewards deep study, proving that even projects born in small circles can achieve a level of near-perfection in competitive design.
