From student leader to political figure: the rise of Melki Sedek Huang
In short: How does a student leader move from organizing campus protests to holding a seat in a major political party? Melki Sedek Huang’s trajectory from the University of Indonesia to the PDI-P highlights the complex intersection of student activism, institutional power, and the controversies of modern Indonesian politics.
Melki Sedek Huang rose to prominence as a student activist at the University of Indonesia (UI). In 2022, he moved into the university's student executive council, eventually becoming the chairman in January 2023. A landmark achievement defined his tenure, as he represented the initial minority group member to lead the body as chairman. During his tenure, he spearheaded significant student movements, including protests against a tuition fee hike that increased costs to more than four times the usual amount, and a high-profile debate involving the three 2024 Indonesian presidential candidates. However, his leadership was marked by intense controversy. In March 2023, his organization published a meme depicting the Speaker of the House of Representatives in a rat body to criticize the Omnibus Law on Job Creation. This sparked a national debate on the ethics of student protest, with some politicians accusing the students of using degrading language rather than substantive critique. Additionally, Huang faced accusations from figures like Faldo Maldini, who claimed he was funded by foreign parties to oppose the job copyright law. He also reported being intimidated by authorities at his home and school in October 2023, a claim the West Kalimantan Regional Police denied. The most significant turning point occurred in late 2023. On December 18, Huang was temporarily dismissed from his position following allegations of sexual assault. While he denied the charges and claimed a lack of transparency in the process, the University of Indonesia Task Force for Preventing and Handling Sexual Violence reported the incident. On January 29, 2024, the Rector officially found him guilty, issuing a one-semester suspension. Huang subsequently filed an objection, alleging irregularities in the investigation. Despite these setbacks, Huang transitioned into formal politics in 2024. He joined the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), citing a commitment to the constitution. He currently serves as the Deputy Chairman of the PDI-P in West Kalimantan, preparing the Red and White Cadets wing. His journey illustrates the volatile path from grassroots student organizing to the corridors of national political power.
