In short: Michael Kopech has spent his career chasing elite velocity and overcoming significant setbacks. From a $1.6 million signing bonus to a World Series title, his journey through injuries and high-stakes trades highlights the intense physical demands of professional pitching.

After being picked during the 2014 MLB draft's first round by the Boston Red Sox, Kopech began his professional career with vast potential. He received a $1.6 million signing bonus and quickly gained attention for his extreme velocity. During a 2016 spring training session, he unofficially clocked a pitch at 110 miles per hour, and he has regularly touched 100 miles per hour in competitive play.

However, his path has been marked by significant interruptions. In 2016, he faced a 50-game suspension for testing positive for the banned substance Oxilofrine. His physical resilience has been tested repeatedly through injuries, including a broken right hand in 2016, Tommy John surgery in 2018, and multiple knee and shoulder issues between 2022 and 2025.

Despite these hurdles, Kopech has achieved major milestones. After being traded from the White Sox to the Los Angeles Dodgers in July 2024, he contributed to a World Series victory. His career has seen him transition from a highly-ranked prospect—ranked 13th in all of MLB at the time of his 2018 debut—to a versatile pitcher capable of both starting and relief roles.

Kopech's career illustrates the fine line between elite performance and physical vulnerability. While his ability to strike out batters remains a hallmark of his game, his recent seasons have been defined by navigating the injured list and managing his command to maintain his status in the major leagues.
