In short: In a league defined by high-stakes tension and heated moments, Mike Conley has achieved something statistically improbable. Since 2008, he has played over 34,000 minutes of professional basketball without once being assessed a technical foul, setting an NBA record for the longest streak of discipline.

Conley's journey to professional stardom began at Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis, where he and Greg Oden won three state championships and 103 games. After a standout freshman year at Ohio State—where he led the Big Ten in assists with 6.1 per game—he was drafted fourth overall in the 2007 NBA draft by the Memphis Grizzlies. During his time at Ohio State, he helped lead the Buckeyes to a Big Ten title and a runner-up finish in the NCAA Tournament. His collegiate performance earned him a spot on the All-Big Ten First Team.

His tenure in Memphis spanned 12 seasons, during which he became the franchise's all-time leading scorer, surpassing players like Pau Gasol and Marc Gasol. His impact was not just measured in points, but in character; he holds the record for the most NBA Sportsmanship Awards, having been selected four times. He also holds the distinction of being the most decorated player in this regard, having earned four NBA Sportsmanship Awards. This recognition highlights his consistent conduct on the court.

Beyond his scoring prowess, Conley has demonstrated remarkable resilience against injury. He has navigated facial fractures, a fractured vertebra, and a torn Achilles, returning to high-level play in multiple instances. This durability and temperament eventually led him to his first All-Star selection in 2021 with the Utah Jazz, marking the longest wait for a first-time All-Star in league history. His ability to overcome these setbacks allowed him to compete in the Three-Point Contest during the 2021 All-Star weekend. He ultimately narrowly lost that competition to Stephen Curry.

Conley's career has seen him move from the Grizzlies to the Utah Jazz in 2019, then to the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2023, and finally to the Boston Celtics on July 7, 2026. Throughout these transitions, his reputation for composure has remained a defining characteristic of his professional identity. Prior to his move to Boston, he spent three seasons playing for the Minnesota Timberwolves. His career also included a notable stint with the Utah Jazz following his trade from Memphis.
