From a Thai piano prodigy to a global K-pop powerhouse
In short: Born into a musical family in Bangkok, Nicha Yontararak followed a cinematic dream. After watching Vanessa Carlton play a moving piano, she moved to South Korea to pursue a career that would eventually lead her to the top of the global charts.
Nicha Yontararak, known professionally as Minnie, began her musical journey in Thailand long before her international breakthrough. Raised in a musical household where her mother, aunt, and uncle all played the piano, she began playing the instrument at just four years old and started vocal training at age six. Her early inspirations were cinematic and profound; she has cited the music video for Vanessa Carlton's 'A Thousand Miles' as the spark that ignited her ambition to become an artist, and watching Alicia Keys perform 'If I Ain't Got You' in 2003 as a pivotal moment in her development.
In 2014, Minnie participated in the Cube Star World Audition in Thailand. Encouraged by her mother, who viewed the move as a 'once in a life opportunity,' she relocated to South Korea in 2015. After being revealed to the public by Cube Entertainment in March 2016, she officially debuted on May 2, 2018, as a member of the girl group (G)I-dle. Since then, she has evolved from a vocalist into a multifaceted creator, contributing to songwriting and composing for tracks like 'Blow Your Mind' and 'Moon.'
Beyond the stage, Minnie has established herself as a multilingual icon, speaking Thai, English, Korean, Japanese, and Mandarin. Her influence extends into fashion and acting, with roles in the Netflix sitcom 'So Not Worth It' and ambassadorships for luxury brands like Miu Miu. In January 2025, she reached a significant milestone with her solo debut, releasing the extended play 'Her.' Her career continues to demonstrate a rare versatility, moving seamlessly between the delicate, breathy vocals of emotive ballads and the powerful high notes required for anthemic K-pop hits.
