In short: In 2008, the Miss Universe pageant moved into the era of high definition. Beyond the glitz, this edition marked a significant geopolitical milestone: it was the first major U.S.-based television production to be held in Vietnam since the end of the Vietnam War.

Held on July 14, 2008, at the Crown Convention Center in Nha Trang, Vietnam, the 57th Miss Universe pageant served as a technological and cultural bridge. It was the first time the competition was broadcast in 1080i High-definition, elevating the visual standard for international audiences. The event was hosted by Jerry Springer and Mel B, featuring a performance by Lady Gaga.

The logistics of the production were massive. To accommodate the pageant, Vietnam constructed a 7,500-seat indoor arena covering 10,000 square meters, which became the third-largest convention center in Southeast Asia. The venue was chosen after an evaluation process involving Miss Universe Organization President Paula Shugart, who visited cities including Dubai and Hanoi before the Vietnamese government approved Nha Trang as the host site.

The competition saw 80 countries and territories represented, featuring a complex web of substitutions and debuts. While Venezuela secured its fifth victory—the first in twelve years—with Dayana Mendoza, the roster was shaped by controversy. Several delegates were appointed after original winners were dethroned or disqualified due to issues ranging from age requirements and marital status to forced marriages and media scandals.

The 2008 edition also introduced a unique piece of jewelry: the CAO Fine Jewelry Crown. Designed by Rosalina Lydster and the Phu Nhuan Jewelry Company, it featured 18k gold, platinum, and over 1,000 precious stones, including 44 carats of diamonds. Estimated at $120,000, this specific crown was intended only for the 2008 edition, while the Phoenix Mikimoto Crown remained in use for other purposes.
