In short: Before becoming Ligue 1 champions, Montpellier HSC was a collection of separate entities. From its early cup successes to a dramatic title win in 2012, the club's journey is a study in resilience, family ownership, and the volatile nature of professional football.

The lineage of Montpellier Hérault Sport Club is a tale of two beginnings. While the club's current identity was forged in 1974 through a merger between AS Paillade and Stade Olympique Montpelliérain, its roots stretch back to 1919. The original Stade Olympique Montpelliérain was a significant force in early French football, winning the Coupe de France in 1929 and participating in the inaugural professional top flight season in 1932–33.

The club's modern era has been defined by the Nicollin family. Louis Nicollin has served as the owner since the 1974 merger, a role now held by his son, Laurent Nicollin. This period saw the club navigate the highs and lows of French football, including a UEFA Intertoto Cup victory in 1999 and a period of instability that saw them relegated to the second tier in 2000 and again in 2004.

The pinnacle of the club's history arrived during the 2011–12 season. Montpellier secured their first Ligue 1 title by finishing with 82 points, narrowly beating Paris Saint-Germain by three points. The campaign was highlighted by Olivier Giroud, who finished as the league's top scorer with 21 goals and 9 assists. However, the club's recent history has seen a decline, culminating in relegation to Ligue 2 on 26 April 2025 after 16 years in the top flight.

Throughout its history, the club has been a breeding ground for talent. Notable alumni include Laurent Blanc, the club's all-time leading scorer, as well as stars like Eric Cantona and Olivier Giroud. Today, the club competes in Ligue 2, managed by Zoumana Camara.
