The brutal forty-seven day siege that erased a Jewish Galilean town from history
In short: Archaeologist Mordechai Aviam details the rise and violent destruction of Yodfat, a Jewish settlement in Lower Galilee. Excavations reveal the daily lives of its inhabitants and the physical traces of their final, desperate stand against the Roman legions during the First Jewish Revolt.
Established around 110 BCE following the Hasmonean annexation of Galilee, Yodfat stood in the mountains north of Sepphoris. While the town is famously documented in the writings of Flavius Josephus, archaeological excavations beginning in 1992 have provided tangible evidence of its existence and its dramatic final chapter.
The site became a focal point of the First Jewish Revolt when it faced a massive Roman force of 40,000 legionaries led by Vespasianus and Titus. According to Josephus, the town endured a forty-seven-day siege that concluded in a devastating massacre. Seven seasons of excavation have since uncovered both the remnants of the town's daily life and the specific preparations made by its defenders to withstand the Roman invasion.
