The first Bahamian to reach the NBA was a draft pioneer
In short: Mychal Thompson broke barriers as the first player born and raised in the Bahamas to enter the NBA. From a high school team with falsified records to winning back-to-back championships with the Los Angeles Lakers, his journey is a masterclass in navigating the complexities of professional sports.
Born in Nassau in 1955, Mychal Thompson's path to the NBA was marked by early obstacles and unique milestones. After moving to Miami as a teenager, he played for Miami Jackson Senior High School. In 1974, he was a key member of the 'Jackson 5' lineup, which achieved a 33–0 record and a state championship. However, the title was later marred by the discovery that four key players, including Thompson, were ineligible due to falsified birth records.
Thompson's professional career began with a historic milestone in 1978. He was selected with the first overall pick in the NBA draft by the Portland Trail Blazers, making him the first foreign-born player ever to be the top pick. He spent eight years in Portland, where he was named to the 1978 All-Rookie team. Despite a season-long injury in 1979 caused by a pickup game in the Bahamas, he rebounded to have a standout 1981–82 season, averaging 20.8 points and 11.7 rebounds per game.
His career reached its peak during the Los Angeles Lakers' 'Showtime' era. Acquired in a complex 1987 trade involving Frank Brickowski and several draft picks, Thompson became a vital backup to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He played a significant role in the Lakers' 1987 and 1988 championship runs. By 2022, he and his son Klay Thompson became one of only five father-son duos to each win an NBA championship, notably being the only tandem to do so in consecutive years.
Beyond the court, Thompson's influence is deeply rooted in his heritage. He is one of only five Bahamians to be drafted into the NBA. His legacy is honored in his home country, where a street in Nassau was named in his honor in 2015. Today, he continues his contribution to the sport as a prominent radio color commentator for the Lakers.
