Bismack Biyombo: From a Youth Tournament in Yemen to the NBA Finals
In short: Discovered at a youth tournament in Yemen, Bismack Biyombo rose from the Spanish leagues to become a defensive force in the NBA. His career is defined by more than just rebounds and blocks; it is marked by a deep commitment to his faith and significant philanthropic efforts in his native Congo.
Born in Lubumbashi, Zaire, in 1992, Bismack Biyombo’s path to professional basketball began in earnest after coach Mário Palma spotted his potential at a youth tournament in Yemen in 2008. By 2011, Biyombo was making waves in Spain, recording a historic triple-double at the Nike Hoops Summit before being selected seventh overall in the NBA draft. His professional journey has spanned over a decade, taking him through franchises including the Charlotte Bobcats, Toronto Raptors, Orlando Magic, Phoenix Suns, Memphis Grizzlies, Oklahoma City Thunder, and the San Antonio Spurs.
Biyombo’s career is characterized by his defensive prowess and rebounding ability. During his time with the Toronto Raptors, he played a pivotal role in the team’s historic 2016 playoff run, helping them reach the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time. His impact was particularly notable in the postseason, where he set a franchise playoff record with 26 rebounds in a single game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. By 2026, his longevity in the league culminated in an appearance in the NBA Finals with the San Antonio Spurs.
Beyond the court, Biyombo is known for his personal devotion and philanthropy. A practicing Catholic, he has maintained a regular fasting practice for 13 seasons, an act of faith that once led to a public health scare during a 2024 game. In 2016, he established the Bismack Biyombo Foundation, which has provided substantial support to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the foundation donated approximately $1 million in medical supplies. Furthermore, he pledged his entire 2021–22 NBA salary toward the construction of a hospital in his home country, honoring the memory of his late father, François.
