From molecular biology to Hollywood and the front lines of global human rights advocacy
In short: Nazanin Boniadi navigated a transition from scientific research to a prominent acting career, eventually becoming a powerful voice for Iranian human rights. Her journey spans from fleeing Tehran as an infant to influencing international policy, all while balancing high-profile roles in major television series and feature film productions.
Born in Tehran in 1979, Boniadi left Iran with her parents shortly after the revolution, settling in London. She initially pursued a path in science, earning a degree in biological sciences from the University of California, Irvine, where she conducted molecular research on heart transplant rejection and cancer treatments. However, in 2006, she pivoted toward acting, eventually becoming the first contract actor of Iranian descent to appear on an American soap opera with her role in General Hospital.
Boniadi’s career includes notable appearances in Homeland, How I Met Your Mother, and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Yet, her professional life has been deeply intertwined with her activism. She served as a spokesperson for Amnesty International USA from 2009 to 2015, focusing on the rights of women and youth in Iran. Her work often involved high-level advocacy, including delivering petitions to the United Nations and meeting with government officials like Kamala Harris to discuss the 2022 protests.
Beyond her public advocacy, Boniadi has navigated complex personal challenges, including her former involvement with the Church of Scientology. Reports and testimony have detailed her experience during a brief relationship with Tom Cruise in 2004 and 2005, a period she described as isolating and heavily managed by church officials. Following her departure from the organization, she became a vocal critic, eventually becoming a lifetime member of the Council on Foreign Relations and continuing her work as a human rights defender on the global stage.
