From Physician to Best-Selling Author: The Dual Life of Khaled Hosseini
In short: Khaled Hosseini spent over a decade practicing internal medicine in California before his debut novel, The Kite Runner, transformed his career. Driven by survivor's guilt and a deep connection to his Afghan roots, he transitioned from the hospital to full-time writing, eventually becoming a prominent advocate for global refugees.
Born in Kabul in 1965, Khaled Hosseini grew up in a privileged, cosmopolitan environment before his family moved to Iran and later France. The 1978 Saur Revolution prevented their return to Afghanistan, leading them to seek political asylum in the United States in 1980. This displacement, coupled with the violent persecution of friends and relatives back home, instilled in Hosseini a profound sense of survivor's guilt that would later permeate his literary work.
Hosseini’s path to literature was unconventional. After graduating from Santa Clara University and the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, he spent over ten years as a physician. He famously likened his medical career to an arranged marriage, a duty he fulfilled until the massive success of his 2003 debut, The Kite Runner, allowed him to pivot to writing. His novels, including A Thousand Splendid Suns and And the Mountains Echoed, consistently explore themes of family, sacrifice, and the enduring impact of Afghanistan's tumultuous history.
Beyond his fiction, Hosseini has dedicated his platform to humanitarian efforts. As a Goodwill Envoy for the UNHCR, he established the Khaled Hosseini Foundation to support refugees returning to Afghanistan. His work remains deeply informed by his early exposure to Persian poetry and his experiences as an immigrant navigating culture shock in California. Today, he continues to bridge the gap between his past in Kabul and his life in the United States, using his voice to advocate for those displaced by conflict.
